What the NPK Numbers Mean

They’re your plants’ nutritional recipe. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are represented in percentage form, always in the order N-P-K.

For instance, The NPK numbers represent the percentage of each nutrient in the fertilizer, in the order N-P-K. For example, a fertilizer with the label 10-10-10 contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium. Put differently, within a 10-pound fertilizer bag, there is 1 pound each of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, while the remaining content constitutes filler.

Other Nutrients

Besides the primary nutrients NPK; calcium, magnesium, and sulfur also play significant roles in contributing to the overall health and nutrient balance of plants.

a. Calcium (Ca): Essential for cell wall structure and overall plant stability. It helps plants stand tall and firm, making them more resistant to diseases and environmental stresses.

Calcium Nitrate water-soluble fertilizer provides a quick source of calcium. It’s suitable for plants that require additional calcium, such as tomatoes and peppers. It also contains nitrogen, providing a dual benefit.

Also, crushed eggshells are a fantastic organic method to reintroduce calcium into the soil, promoting overall soil health. To eliminate any potential bacteria, consider baking or boiling the eggshells before crushing them, then sprinkle the crushed shells over your garden.

b. Magnesium (Ma): A crucial component of chlorophyll, promoting photosynthesis. It ensures that plants can capture sunlight and convert it into the energy they need for growth.

Epsom salt is a readily available source of magnesium. Dissolve it in water and apply it to the soil to correct magnesium deficiencies. It’s particularly beneficial for plants like tomatoes, peppers, and roses.

c. Sulfur (S): Vital for amino acid production and enzyme activity. It assists in various metabolic processes, promoting plant health and growth.

If your soil lacks sulfur, a soil acidifier fertilizer can be beneficial, as it includes elemental sulfur and gypsum to assist in reducing soil pH.

  • Plant Growth (High Nitrogen): During the vegetative stage, when plants are focused on developing leaves and stems, a higher nitrogen ratio is beneficial. Nitrogen promotes lush green foliage and vigorous growth. One of the organic fertilizers, Blood Meal, made from dried and powdered animal blood is a high nitrogen fertilizer. Fish emulsion, derived from fish, is also a high nitrogen fertilizer.

Bone Meal that is a natural fertilizer made from finely ground bones is a high phosphorus fertilizer, and Potash is a high potassium fertilizer. Different brands’ fertilizers may show different numbers.
