6 Tips for Urban Gardening | Small Space Gardening

Urban gardening has become a trending practice, with people endeavoring to grow plants within confined urban environments. In the hustle and bustle of city life, where space is often a luxury, urban gardening emerges as a delightful solution to bring the tranquility of nature into our lives. So, what is urban gardening, and how can you make the most of it in limited urban spaces? Let’s dive in!

What is Urban Gardening?

Urban gardening, often referred to as city or small-space gardening, is the practice of growing plants and vegetables in city settings, no matter how small the available space. It can take various forms, from rooftop gardens and balcony planters to community gardens and vertical plant walls. The beauty of urban gardening lies in its adaptability, making it accessible to city dwellers with limited room to spare.

Things You Need for Urban Gardening

My very first gardening happened at a 500-square-foot one-bedroom with no deck or balcony (in California). My only available outdoor space was a small area right next to the front door. I had a desire to grow vegetables, so I embarked on this gardening journey by purchasing seeds, one seed starter kit, plant labels, potting mix and some plastic pots from a big box store. I also repurposed a water jug as a container. At that time, I had zero gardening knowledge. I simply followed the instructions provided with the kit, sowing the seeds into the pallets and (not that much) patiently waited. Waited for few days, some seed germinated and some did not. I transplanted germinated ones into the pots, and I harvested a handful of peppers and Arugula.

Seeds I got to start gardening

Starting a small-space garden doesn’t require any fancy equipment. All you need is seeds, pots or recycled container and potting mix. Plus, a small space where your plants can receive ample sunlight throughout the day.

Plants for Small Spaces

When space is limited, choosing the right plants is crucial. Consider these options:

  • Green Onions: These are simple to grow, whether in soil or water. You can purchase them from a grocery store, cut a 2-inch segment from the green onion tops along with the roots, and then either plant them in soil or place them in a cup of water. Be sure to change the water every few days to prevent mold.
  • Herbs: Rosemary, basil, mint, and oregano thrive in small pots or window boxes and are easy to grow, offering versatility in cooking.
  • Greens: Lettuce, spinach, and arugula can flourish in small containers.
  • Tom Thumb Peas: Ideal for small gardens, they produce small, sweet pods.
  • Tomatoes: Patio or cherry tomato varieties work well in pots.

How to Maximize Small Spaces for Gardening

  • Choose the right plants: Compact or dwarf varieties of plants are well-suited to small spaces. Many vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plants come in space-saving varieties.
  • Vertical Gardening: use vertical space by installing trellises, wall-mounted planters, tower planters or shelves. This allows you to grow plants upwards, saving horizontal space. Vining plants like peas, cucumbers, and certain flowers work well for vertical gardening.
  • Container gardening: Containers are excellent for small spaces. Use pots, hanging baskets, and window boxes to grow plants on balconies, patios, or windowsills. Make sure the containers have proper drainage and are appropriately sized for the plants you intend to grow.
  • Interplanting and succession planting: Maximize the use of your space by interplanting compatible crops. For example, you can plant lettuce under taller tomato plants or grow quick-maturing vegetables in between slower-growing ones to make the most of available space throughout the growing season.
  • Plan your garden layout: Make a detailed plan of your small garden space to ensure efficient use of every square inch. This includes accounting for plant spacing, pathways, and access points. Read this post if you are interested in garden planning.
  • Pruning and maintenance: Regularly prune and maintain your plants to prevent overcrowding and ensure optimal growth. Remove dead or diseased plant material to make room for healthy growth.

Urban gardening in small spaces is a rewarding endeavor, bringing the beauty and serenity of nature into your city life. With a bit of planning, creativity, and care, you can enjoy the pleasures of gardening, even in the heart of a bustling metropolis. Happy gardening!
